Limestone Coast Food and Wine
Only the finest
Fancy a drop of some of South Australia's best red wine? You're in the right place.
The Limestone Coast is home to the Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, Mount Benson and Padthaway wine regions. There are more than 40 cellar doors to choose from.
The Coonawarra name is synonymous with robust red wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. Nature has given the wine region an amazing advantage, laying a thin strip of rich, terra rossa soil over a limestone bed.
Perfect conditions
Throw in warm summers, cold, wet winters and a long ripening season and you’ve got perfect grape growing conditions.
Don’t ignore the whites though. You’ll find quality whites around the region. The Sauvignon Blancs from the cooler coastal wineries have a very good reputation.
At Wynns Coonawarra you can even have a try at blending your own red wine.
Finest produce
Great food makes excellent wine an even better experience. With the Southern Ocean on one side and some of South Australia’s best farmland on the other, it's no surprise the Limestone Coast produces sensational food.
Not only do we produce some of South Australia’s best seafood (you must try the lobster), there’s also succulent Wagyu beef, lamb, delicious beef, prize duck, venison, kangaroo and even emu... that's just the meat. The great terra rossa soil means potatoes and strawberries are among the best in Australia.
Visit the Mayura Station Tasting Room to sample premium full blood Wagyu beef overlooking the very farm on which the cattle are raised. Interact with the chef as he cooks this award winning beef.
Follow the trail
To help turn your wine and food experience into a real holiday highlight; our producers have formed the Limestone Coast Real Food Trail. It features more than 50 farm gates, cellar doors, restaurants, cafés and retailers. From emu mettwurst to fine wine, pick up a full colour brochure from a Visitor Information Centre to plan your Real Food Trail adventure.
Stop by the Food Group Farmers’ Markets. Held in various locations around the region, fill your basket with a variety of fresh produce, amazing pickles, preserves and homemade jams.
If you want someone else to do the cooking (and the dishes), there are cosy cafés and superior à la carte dining for your enjoyment.
The Limestone Coast, feed your senses.
