The shipwreck coast
Wherever you go and whatever you see on the Limestone Coast, water will play a part.
The Coorong is truly unique with 100 kilometres (62 miles) of stunningly beautiful salty, shallow lagoons, separated from the wild Southern Ocean by massive sand dunes. The bird life is stunning.
The big seas off the Limestone Coast have claimed 100 ships over the last 200 years. Take a fascinating tour along the rugged and beautiful coast on the Southern Ocean Shipwreck Trail.
Lighthouses and lobsters
Beachport Jetty is one of Australia’s longest jetties. Kingston South East must have the world’s largest crustacean. The Big Lobster (Larry to the locals) stands 17 metres (56 feet) tall and weighs more than four tonnes (9000 pounds)!
Six lighthouses mark some treacherous stretches of the Limestone Coast. The conditions are so tough, the original Cape Northumberland Lighthouse fell into the sea and others may follow, so make sure you visit one.
Fossils, lakes and caves
Limestone Coast geology is incredible. The result is some spectacular sights, like the World Heritage Listed Naracoorte Cave fossils.
Dissolved minerals created both Mount Gambier’s stunning Blue Lake and Beachport’s super-salty Pool of Siloam.
The Umpherston Sinkhole in Mount Gambier is home to a beautiful public garden.
Mount Schank is another dormant volcano. Go diving in the garden-like Ewens Ponds and caves at Piccaninnie Ponds.
For something more genteel, stroll round one of 17 golf courses, including the picturesque 18 hole Blue Lake course.

Heritage and history
The Limestone Coast has a rich cultural history. Australia's first saint, Mary MacKillop founded the first Josephite School in Penola, which is still standing. Indigenous history is abundant, visit places like the Coorong Wilderness Lodge to learn about Aboriginal culture.
Wine regions
The Limestone Coast is home to some premium wine regions including the Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, Mount Benson and Padthaway. There are more than 40 cellar doors to choose from. You can even try blending your own wine at Wynns Coonawarra.
