Flinders Ranges and Outback Attractions
Ancient beauty
The Flinders Ranges and South Australian outback have worked for a billion years to look this good, you’ll be more than impressed.
Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre of simply mammoth proportions. It’s 17 kilometres long and eight kilometres wide (11x 6 miles). Easy to explore with sign-posted bushwalks, there are many ways to see Wilpena Pound. The view will leave you speechless.
Noodle for opals
Why are opals so seductive? Well in northern South Australia, fossickers don’t even think about it, they just keep ‘noodling’ (searching) the virtual lunar landscape around Coober Pedy trying to find the perfect piece. Stay in an underground house while you’re there to escape the heat. It’s a unique experience.
Expect the unexpected
Take a steam powered ride on the historic Pichi Richi Railway from Quorn. Enjoy the sound and light shows at the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre and the Blinman Mine. Hike through the rocky pathways and clear tricking water of Alligator Gorge. Drink beer at the iconic William Creek Hotel or Mungerannie Hotel.
Enjoy a Flinders Ranges and outback adventure.
Scenic flights
Book a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and surrounding ranges, if you want to stay grounded take a four-wheel drive safari. Fully escorted, explore hidden gorges adorned with rare and sacred Aboriginal rock art and lined with stunning river red gums.
Lake Eyre, a vast saltpan in the middle of outback South Australia rarely fills with water. When it does thousands of people and even more birds flock to its shores. Dazzling carpets of colour transform the surrounding desert, as dozens of vein-like creeks bring life to the parched earth.
Anna Creek Painted Hills
Many of our outback treasures are best seen from the air and the Anna Creek Painted Hills are no exception. Located deep in the outback of South Australia, this fragile and spectacular section of the Breakaways, is a rocky outcrop of hills of such diverse colours that you’ll swear they’ve been painted.
