You don’t have to be a connoisseur to appreciate Clare Valley food and wine.

Why? Just drive the scenic roads, walk or cycle to wineries and restaurants dotted along the 35 kilometre Riesling Trail and you’ll see why.

There are world-class wines and a vibrant food industry. It’s all framed by a spectacular landscape of fertile hills and plains.

Jesuit Priests fleeing religious persecution in Silesia (now part of Poland), planted the Clare Valley's first vines in 1851. They originally made sacramental wine but within 15 years, other budding winemakers moved in.

Clare Valley wines

When looking for wineries, visit Clare, Sevenhill, Watervale, Mintaro, Auburn and Polish Hill River. The slopes, ridges and plains create distinct soil types and micro-climates in each region. Wine lovers are the big winners.

Five-star rated wineries are scattered throughout the Clare Valley and its signature wine, Riesling, is among the world’s best.

There are more than 40 wineries to see and you won’t believe the views from some of them.

Annie’s Lane at Quelltaler (circa 1863) and Grosset Wines sit on a crowded winery “top shelf”. Reilly’s Wines, Clos Clare and Kilikanoon Wines are among the stunning boutique producers.

Gourmet heritage

The Clare Valley’s pioneering heritage remains strong. Australia’s first gourmet weekend was held in 1984 and more than 10,000 people still flock to Clare each May to celebrate the end of vintage.

Like the wineries, there is food to please every palate.

From country style pub meals, to contemporary fine dining, there’s wine to match your food and food to match your mood!

Taste the real Clare Valley by sampling locally produced olive oils, preserves, pickles and cured meats.

Farm gate sales and markets
